More Information about the Cooling System
Your vehicle’s engine produces intense heat from both combustion and friction. To prevent overheating, the cooling system works to carry that heat away and release it into the air. A mixture of water and chemical coolant circulates from the engine through hoses to the radiator and back, carrying heat away. While that’s the basic concept, several essential components make the system work efficiently.
The radiator comprises thin tubes with attached fins that maximize surface area and airflow to cool the fluid. If rust or debris clogs the radiator or develops a hole, coolant can leak out, requiring repair or replacement. A fan helps move air across the fins to boost cooling, especially when the vehicle is idling or driving slowly. The water pump keeps coolant circulating, while the thermostat monitors its temperature and opens a valve when the liquid gets too hot. Inside the cabin, the heater core—a small radiator—uses hot coolant to produce warm air when you turn on the heat.
Although coolant is often referred to as “antifreeze” and is designed to lower the freezing point of the liquid, frigid temperatures can still cause it to freeze. That’s why engines have freeze plugs designed to pop out under pressure to prevent the engine block from cracking. If any part of your cooling system fails, the Martin’s Tire and Service team is here to diagnose the issue and get you safely back on the road.
